What outcomes are required by IAB?

IAB requires that every student develops, in specific ways and to certain extents, ERC Student Profile by the end of secondary school. The target profile, hereafter referred to as IAB profile, is reified in the form of particular measurable outcomes in each of the disciplines mentioned above. Outcomes pertain to well-defined systems that are critical for realizing the big picture within and across disciplines.

IAB outcomes are leveled in accordance with two thresholds: basic and mastery. Thresholds are derived from the paradigmatic nature of each discipline, and from educational research. The basic threshold corresponds to core or fundamental conceptions and habits of mind that students need to develop at a given grade level for meaningful learning of course materials. The mastery threshold corresponds to an advanced level of understanding whereby students can meaningfully deploy learned course materials, mostly on their own, for further development of their profile within and across disciplines.

A unique Profiling Schema is used to spell out two types of outcomes associated with the scope and structure of every system: conceptions and habits of mind, with a focus more on the latter than on the former. The IAB Profiling Schema is further used for other purposes: (a) ascertaining whether curricula at a given school actually contribute to the development of the IAB Student Profile; (b) organizing course materials so as to help students efficiently develop the target Student profile; (c) spelling out the taxonomy of, and designing, various IAB assessments; (d) documenting student achievement on these assessments, (e) tracking the evolution of every student’s profile, and subsequently (f) designing appropriate learning activities that help students efficiently develop the target IAB Student Profile.
